Full description

Cats don't sleep flat. They sleep curled, tucked in, with their back against something.

Watch where your cat actually chooses to sleep and it's rarely the middle of a cushion. It's a laundry basket, a cardboard box, the gap between two sofa arms. Somewhere with edges. Cats sleep between twelve and sixteen hours a day, and they spend most of that in a curl, which conserves heat and keeps the vulnerable belly covered. A flat mat gives them none of that.

The Instinct Basket is built round for exactly that reason. The raised rim gives the head and chin somewhere to rest, the sides give the back something to lean against, and the depth means your cat is tucked into it rather than perched on top of it.

Two sizes, and the difference matters. The small fits cats up to 15 lb and measures 42 cm across. The large fits 15 to 31 lb and measures 48 cm, and that upper range also covers small dogs. Go by the curl, not the cat: measure your cat when they're already curled up somewhere and add a couple of inches. A bed that's too big defeats the point, because there's nothing to lean against.

Where to put it. This is the part most people get wrong. Cats pick sleeping spots by sightlines and warmth, not by comfort alone. Put it somewhere with a view of the room and a bit of height if you can, away from the litter box and the busiest walkway. If your cat ignores it for the first week, move it before you give up on it. Nine times out of ten it's the spot, not the bed.

What it won't do. It won't stop a cat sleeping on your bed, and it won't win over a cat who has already claimed one specific chair. Cats choose. What it will do is give them a better option than the laundry basket.

Shipping and returns. Orders leave within 24 to 72 hours. Delivery takes 9 to 12 business days, tracked, with duties and taxes settled before it ships, so there is nothing to pay on arrival. Not right for you? Email us within 30 days of delivery and we'll refund it.

Where it goes

This is the part most people get wrong, and it decides whether she uses it at all.

Cats pick sleeping spots by sightlines and warmth, not by comfort alone. She wants to see the door and she wants to be near you.

Put it somewhere with a view of the room and a bit of height if you can, away from the litter box and away from the busiest walkway.

If she ignores it for the first week, move it before you give up on it. Nine times out of ten it is the spot, not the basket.

Give her a few days

Almost nobody gets it on day one, and almost everybody gets it by day three.

  1. 01

Put it where she already sleeps

Not where you would like her to sleep. Start in the room she has already chosen for herself, in the corner she already uses.

  2. 02

    Leave it alone

Do not lift her into it and do not move it for the first few days. She will sit near it before she sits in it, and that is the sequence.

  3. 03

    Give it three days

Most cats take about that long. If she is still ignoring it after a week, move it to another corner before you conclude anything.

A cat who has already claimed one particular chair will keep it. What this gives her is a better option than the laundry basket, and in most homes it becomes the spot within a week or two.

Why Instinct Basket?

There are hundreds of cat beds and scratchers available. After a year of studying cat behavior, we created the only one designed for cat instincts, not aesthetics.

  • Natural rope triggers instant recognitionPaw pads recognize it like tree bark, biology does the work.
  • Pheromones sink in permanentlySynthetic materials repel scent within hours. Natural rope absorbs it forever.
  • Gets BETTER with every scratchWorn = more scent = more trusted. Cheap products just fall apart.
  • Complete territory in one spotScratch the rim, sleep in the center, play with the toy, without leaving their claimed space.
  • Built to last years, not monthsHandwoven rope gets stronger with use. No replacement cycle.

    Better Than Her Cardboard Box

This is the first bed my cat has slept in immediately. She even chose it over the cardboard box she normally prefers! As an added bonus, she has also stopped scratching the furniture.

    Our Maine Coon Loves It

Our Maine Coon absolutely loves her basket! I’m so glad we discovered your business. She sits in it nearly every day, and it has quickly become one of her favourite spots.

A Favourite for the Whole Family

Not only did my cats love the basket, but our mama cat even decided it was the perfect place to have her kittens. It has definitely become a favourite in our home.

    He Claimed It Immediately

As soon as I placed the basket on our living-room floor, Sir Purrs Alot jumped straight in. His little brother, Atticus, isn’t even allowed near it—apparently Sir Purrs has decided it belongs entirely to him!

    Their Favourite Place to Sleep

I purchased three baskets, and our cats happily share all of them. They seem to treat them like little comfort nests—they fall asleep inside and wake up ready to run around and play.

    Give Them a Few Days

I nearly returned the new beds, but after following the suggestions, I decided to give them a little more time. I introduced Loki to his basket in the room where he feels most comfortable, and Thor soon started using the other one as well. It took about three days, but now they absolutely love them. Thank you so much!

    She Curled Up Right Away

She was curious about the basket right away and curled up inside almost immediately. It didn’t take her long at all to make herself comfortable.

    Kitsune Made It His Own

I originally bought this basket for one of my kittens, but Kitsune quickly decided it had been made especially for him. He looks incredibly comfortable in it.

Frequently asked questions

Which size do I need?

Small is 42 cm across and suits cats up to 15 lb. Large is 48 cm, for 15 to 31 lb, and also fits small dogs. Measure your cat curled up rather than stretched out and add a couple of inches.

Is a bigger one safer to order?

No, and this is the mistake we see most. Too big and there is nothing to lean against, which is the entire reason a round bed works. Snug is the point.

My cat is ignoring it.

Give it a week, then move it before you write it off. Cats pick by sightline and warmth: a view of the room, a bit of height, away from the litter box and the walkway. Nine times out of ten it is the spot rather than the bed.

Will it stop them sleeping on my bed?

No. Nothing does. What it does is give them somewhere better than the laundry basket for the other fourteen hours.

Can a small dog use it?

The large size suits small dogs up to about 31 lb, and dogs who curl rather than sprawl get the most out of it. A dog who sleeps flat out on their side wants a mat, not a basket.

How do I clean it?

Spot clean the rope with a damp cloth and let it dry fully. Do not put it in a machine: woven rope loses its shape when it is soaked and spun.

Will my cat scratch it apart?

Some cats will knead and scratch the rim, and rope takes that better than fabric does. If your cat is a determined scratcher, put a scratcher next to it. They will use whichever is closer.

Is it warm enough on its own?

The sides hold heat better than a flat bed, and for most cats that is enough. For an older cat or a thin coated breed in winter, add a folded blanket inside it rather than buying a bigger bed.

Where should it go in a Canadian winter?

Off the floor and away from the draught at the door. Floors near an exterior wall stay several degrees colder than the room, which is exactly why cats end up on the back of the sofa from November onwards.
