Why does the lint roller stop working halfway?

Because tape only reaches what is on top. Once the surface hair is gone, the sheet is picking up nothing while the cushion still looks grey, and the hair you can see is below the surface.

Can I use a hair remover on the dog?

No. Fabric tools are angled to pull hair out of a weave, which is not something you want near skin. Brushing is a separate job with a brush made for coats.

Will a cover stop the smell as well?

It catches most of what causes it, because the smell is damp fur and skin oil in the upholstery. The cover goes in the machine; that is the part that actually fixes it.

Is a fabric cover waterproof?

No, and we would rather say so here. It handles damp paws and normal use. A full accident goes through to the cushion, and for that you want a waterproof layer instead.

What about the car?

Same problem, worse conditions: hair, road salt and grit end up in the weave together. Shake the mats out first so you are not pushing sand back in, then work the seats dry.
