The fur between the pads is where the trouble starts.
It mats, it holds grit and road salt, and on a smooth floor it slides under the pads and takes away the grip your dog needs to stop and turn. Scissors near a paw are nobody's idea of a good time, and a full size clipper is too wide to get in there.
This one is built narrow on purpose. A slim head and fine, rounded teeth let you take the fur down between the pads, around the face, and in the sanitary areas, in the small controlled passes those spots need. The rounded edges on the blade guide the fur into the teeth instead of digging into skin.

The first size I ordered was a little loose, so measuring the paws carefully is important. The correct size stays on much better and gives our dog noticeably more grip on the kitchen tiles. One sock sometimes turns after a lot of running, but they work well for normal walking.

My cat sleeps in the same chair every afternoon and always leaves a layer of white fur behind. Two or three passes gather nearly all of it into one strip that is easy to remove. I have used it dozens of times and it still works just as well.

It removes our husky's hair surprisingly well and feels sturdy. My only advice is to shake off the water and leave it somewhere open after rinsing because it takes a little while to dry. Ours now stays beside the couch because we use it almost every day.

No. It is a detail trimmer with a narrow head. A body clip needs a larger machine with a wider blade, and trying to do a full coat with this will take an hour and annoy both of you.

Over USB, with the cable in the box. Charge it fully before the first session so you are not stopping halfway through with one paw done.
Then the tool is not the problem, and no tool will fix it. Work up to it over a couple of weeks: hold a paw for two seconds, let go, treat, stop. Run the trimmer near them without touching them. Boring and repetitive beats one long session that goes wrong.
Level with the pads, not shorter. That fur is not decoration: it protects the skin between the pads. You are taking away the part that sticks out past them and mats.
Every four to six weeks for most dogs, more often for a coat that grows fast. If the fur is curling out past the pads, it is due.
It does, and this is the Canadian reason to own one. Long fur between the pads traps road salt and packed snow, which is what turns into ice balls on a walk and sore skin afterwards. Fur kept level with the pads holds far less of it, and rinsing the paws afterwards actually reaches the skin.
