Your cat is cold more often than you think.
Cats are comfortable at temperatures well above what most of us keep the house at, which is why they end up on the radiator, in the sunbeam, or squeezed behind the couch cushions. Older cats and thin coated breeds feel it first, and in a Canadian winter they feel it for five months.
A cave bed works on a simple principle: it doesn't make heat, it keeps theirs in. The covered top and enclosed sides trap the warmth your pet is already giving off, so the space inside sits several degrees above the room. That's also why it suits nervous cats and dogs who like to den. Walls on three sides mean nothing can approach unseen, and for a lot of animals that's the difference between resting and dozing with one eye open.

Measure your pet from nose to base of tail while they're curled up, not stretched out, and pick the size that gives a couple of inches to spare. Snug is the point here. A cave bed that's too roomy loses the warmth it's meant to hold.

It works very well on our couch and the fabric seats in my car. It is less effective on our thick rug, so I still use the vacuum there. For furniture and clothing, however, it is much more convenient than bringing out the vacuum every day.

The first size I ordered was a little loose, so measuring the paws carefully is important. The correct size stays on much better and gives our dog noticeably more grip on the kitchen tiles. One sock sometimes turns after a lot of running, but they work well for normal walking.

My cat sleeps in the same chair every afternoon and always leaves a layer of white fur behind. Two or three passes gather nearly all of it into one strip that is easy to remove. I have used it dozens of times and it still works just as well.

It removes our husky's hair surprisingly well and feels sturdy. My only advice is to shake off the water and leave it somewhere open after rinsing because it takes a little while to dry. Ours now stays beside the couch because we use it almost every day.

Spot clean and air it. Check the label before machine washing: a soaked cave loses its shape, and the roof is the part that does not come back.

Off the floor if you can, and away from exterior walls and the draught by the door. A floor along an outside wall runs several degrees colder than the middle of the room, which is exactly the cold your cat is already avoiding.
